Azem and Victoria, two international students of METU, became close friends during their studies abroad in Hungary, Budapest – despite the pandemic, online education, being from different countries (Kyrgyzstan and Russia) and different programs (Communication and Media Science BA, Commerce and Marketing BSc).

Some of the most interesting things we learnt at university come from our interactions with international students online. 

We began our university studies at METU in 2020. Unfortunately, this was the year the pandemic started, which affected education all over the world. Our first two semesters at METU also started online. 

At first, we thought that we will just be sitting at home, doing nothing else but studying, without making any new friends. However, in the first two semesters, I had social studies project class, changing the way things turned out. 

We had different projects each semester. The professor divided us into groups, and our task was to work in these teams for the entire semester. We were spending the whole time with our teammates. We were doing our group work together, and at the same time, we started to get to know each other better. With time, we became close friends. We were talking even after classes, about anything and everything, even though we are from different countries and different programs. 

When we first came to university after education returned to normal, we met with each other in person as well. It was so much fun, and it felt like we have known each other for years. 

We want to say thank you to the university - 

first of all, for of the quality (online) education,  

secondly, for giving us the opportunity to meet new friends.”
