METU students won the TriMedia Tournament 2022

University students from Hungary and Poland could once again test their knowledge and skills during the TriMedia Tournament of 2022. This year, the topic was media and culture during the Cold War.

The event was held in May 2022 at the Charles University in Prague. Participating students could also participate in numerous exciting activities during the two-day long program organized in the Czech capital city. 

  

Sightseeing and professional programs at TriMedia Tournament 2022 

  

On the first day Hungarian student took part in a guided tour organized by Jan Miessler from Charles University, during which they could visit and learn about Prague’s most significant locations connected to media history, with a special focus on the Cold War. Later that day, the students got a chance to meet with the representatives from Sinopsis. Sinopsis is a project of the non-profit organization AcaMedia, realized in cooperation with the Department of Sinology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague with the aim is to provide overview of developments in China and the impacts in today’s world from the perspective of Chinese, Czech and world media and observers. 

 

 Students had a very fruitful conversation with the representatives and discussed several important and relevant topics within media field. 

 

“It was quite interesting to hear their perspective on free media and what kind of practices they are using to make media more trustworthy. They also shared some of the struggles they face in their attempts to bring authenticity to the world of media.” - shared METU student Mehdi-zada Teymur.

On day two before the start of the competition, participants had the chance to visit Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe, which provides accurate news and information in 27 languages and 23 countries.  

 

“Students got to see journalists as they were working, did a small tour around the office and had a session with a Radio Free Europe representative who talked about the organization, about their values, goals as well as elaborated a lot on the current situation in the world. Students got to discuss the challenges that journalists around the world are facing. The war in Ukraine was also a big topic and the representative could share a lot of insights on the current developments in the region specifically from the media perspective.” 

 

METU Communication and Media Science BA students win TriMedia Tournament 2022 

 

The competition itself took place during the afternoon of the second day. There were four participating teams: two from Budapest Metropolitan University and two from the Polish Jagiellonian University. 

 

The head of the jury was Olga Porfimovych, professor at the Institute of Journalism Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. The jury members were Agnieszka Szymańska professor at the Jagellonian University in Cracow, at the Institut of Journalism, Media & Communication, Jan Miessler from Charles University Department of Meida Studies and Györgyi Rétfalvi from METU. 

 

This year’s winner was the group of METU Communication and Media Science BA students Sidorina Ekaterina, Kunishio Hikari, Mehdi-zada Teymur, Nabi Zeeshan Masood and Szabó Dóra. 

 

The winning METU team made a video and a blog article about their experiences as well.
