“Spirits’ Homecoming”
Memory, Healing, and Shamanism on Screen

Memory, Healing, and Shamanism on Screen
Come join us for an evening at the Korean Cultural Center as we watch Spirits’ Homecoming (2016), a powerful movie directed by Cho Jung-rae. The movie incorporates Korean shamanistic customs like 씻김굿 (ssitkim-gut), a purification ceremony meant to provide peace to wandering spirits, while fusing actual history with dreamy images.
Following the screening, Dr. Nikolett Roque-Kőrösi of the Department of Korean Studies (KRE) will discuss how the film expresses loss, healing, and remembrance through the use of shamanism, symbolism, and cultural memory. We will be able to remember and establish a connection with these stories and spirits through a contemplative and meaningful evening of conversation. The event will be held in English.
