Important Information for Student Mobility
How to choose a university?
- In this Erasmus+ program, you can only apply to European partner universities.
- You can apply for one semester—either fall or spring. If funding is available, fall semester students may extend to the spring semester, but spring semester students cannot extend into the next academic year's fall semester.
- You typically do not join your home-year group at the host university but select from an "Erasmus course" list. These courses do not have to match METU’s curriculum exactly. Check the partner university’s website for available courses!
- Consider your academic progress! Use the Student Information Center for planning and check the deadlines for graduation. Consult your program director, department head, or institute head about the best options for you. All courses you plan to include in your Learning Agreement (OLA) must be approved by your institute/department head!
- Highly popular (Mediterranean) cities tend to be oversubscribed. To maximize your chances, apply to other universities as well! We have excellent partner universities in smaller cities and beyond Western Europe.
- The Erasmus grant does not cover all expenses—research the cost of living in the host country, look into additional funding options, and ensure you can finance your stay. You may work abroad according to local regulations.
- Housing in big cities can be challenging—consider dormitory options and the housing market of your chosen destinations as early as possible.
- At Southern European universities, local language skills might be essential. Ask Erasmus alumni about their experiences.
Academic Considerations:
- You must remain an active student; completing all subjects before departure is not allowed. The Student Information Center can guide you through your curriculum.
- If you study abroad during your final semester, you must complete all required courses by METU’s graduation deadline. This is often problematic due to different academic calendars, potential administrative delays, and recognition of credits, which might prevent you from graduating on time.
- Art students should avoid mobility in their final semester due to practical requirements and thesis-related deadlines.
- At least 20 credits must be completed at the host university, and at least 10 credits must be recognized at METU as compulsory or elective subjects.
- Self-funded students must pay their METU tuition fee during mobility to maintain active student status. This qualifies them for additional financial support.
- Even if you are a part-time student at METU, you will be considered a full-time student at the host university.
- METU accepts language certificates from its Foreign Language Institute for Erasmus applications, but the host university may require an official language exam. Always check the requirements on the host institution’s website!
