Setenay Cevherli / Environment Design BA

“...I was able to see my progress throughout the three years of my education. I was able to extend my horizon when it comes to art and creativity. It was amazing to learn from great professors and artists.”

The Best of METU diploma 2021 series introduces the best diploma projects of our students and the amazing creators behind these. These mini-interviews offer a glimpse into the thoughts, feelings and plans of our fresh graduates of Budapest Metropolitan University.

In this interview, meet Setenay Cevherli, graduate of our Environmental Design BA program.

Setenay has been interested in buildings since her childhood, and she enjoyed the creative freedom and supportive environment during her studies. She believes METU helped her gain confidence and an individuality, and she plans on pursuing her education at the university.

What made you want to educate yourself in this field, why did you choose this major?

I always wanted to become a designer and to create. When I was a child, my parents took me to art exhibitions and made me comment the artworks. I was always drawing, and I had my own opinion on things in general. When we were traveling or visiting historical buildings, I was usually looking at the ceiling to see the ornaments. This habit of mine has never changed since childhood, and it ended up being a fundamental aspect of my career.

What inspires you?

Hardworking people inspire me the most. People who are doing things that others might think impossible are my biggest inspiration whenever I am working on a task.

What were your favorite projects during your studies and why?

One of my favorite projects was designing a winter garden for Nyugati Square. My idea for this project was to create a peaceful escape place from the city rush for the audience, even if just for an hour. I used glass and steel skeleton structures for creating a dome. Adding flowers and different types of plants resulted in a dreamy environment in the middle of the city.

What was your diploma project? Why did you choose this topic?

Gun rooms and security rooms were my interest for three years now because of the creative potential for creating secure environments. For my diploma work, I wanted to make a gun showroom, lounge, and shooting range. I wanted to create an atmosphere where high-class people can purchase guns, try them and socialize.

The project itself is luxurious and elegant. I kept the concept simplistic but eye-pleasing at the same time, with a touch of luxury. Bright colors were chosen to keep people calm and peaceful in a violent environment.

The building, which is located in Hold utca 23, is a building close to the Hungarian Parliament and close to our target customers. As it is a historical building, I put the protective layers around the shooting range in order to not harm the original building. The interior elements were designed in accordance with the old gothic architecture of the building.

How did METU support your professional development during your studies?

METU had a great impact on my vision in many ways. But the most important one is that I was able to see my progress throughout the three years of my education. I was able to extend my horizon when it comes to art and creativity. It was amazing to learn from great professors and artists in these three years.

What does “Inspired by creativity” mean to you at METU?

In my opinion, creativity and inspiration are working together in a process. Inspiration can be hard to find, which influences an individual based on the kind of work they would like to do. However, creativity is a skill that people can improve over time and practice. I think "Inspired by creativity" means creativity is a highly appreciated element in the university that takes skill and time to develop. I think at METU, this is highly respected and influential.

What would you say to someone who is interested in METU, why should they choose this university?

I think they should choose METU because they can find themselves here. I think it is really important in our major to be able to truly express ourselves.

At METU, students can think outside of the box and show their character through their artwork, which I found truly amazing when I started my studies. Professors pay attention to who you are and what influences you and your work, which makes you gain an individual and confident mindset.

What are your plans for the future?

I will continue my studies at METU. I will start my master's degree in Management and Leadership, as I want to work as a project manager in architectural projects.
